The Skin Kissed Look

Preparing, protecting and prolonging your tan starts with giving extra care to your skin every step of the way. Follow these simple tips to not only ensure a longer, but healthier tan

Regular Exfoliation

You get a tan when the sun stimulates the production of a pigment called melanin in your skin, which colours the top layer. This layer sheds approximately every two weeks, so to ensure that all your skin cells are at the very start of their cycle, a regular vigorous body scrubs prepares the skin.

Keep Hydrated

When skin dries out it flakes, so it will shed sooner rather than later. To ensure cells stay hydrated, you need to feed them from the inside as well as from the outside. That means keeping up your water intake, especially in the sun when you lose more water through sweating.

Sun wise

It’s important you protect your skin with high SPF protection creams especially during the first 3-4 days of sun exposure. Remember to start exposing your skin to the UV rays gradually in order to allow melanin to form and to protect your skin from premature aging and skin cancer. Do not use sunscreens you bought the previous year as the chemical formula may become unstable. Avoid exposing to the sun in the peak sun hours when the UV rays are most powerful and when even the highest SPF protection creams can’t protect you 100%.

Moisturise

As well as hydrating skin from the inside, you also need to moisturise it from the outside and a hydrated skin will ensure a prolonged tan. Although your regular moisturiser will do the job, after-sun creams frequently have additional ingredients, such as aloe vera to soothe skin. Others have tan-enhancing ingredients, such as the Adaptasun complex which stimulate melanin production to maintain your tan.

Different skin types need different products. At Melita we not only offer an extensive range of dermo-cosmetics but our trained staff will be able to help you find the range best suited to your skin type and needs.
