Rejuvenate your skin after the festive season over-indulgence

Posted on: Thursday, January 5th, 2017

From puffiness to breakouts or just an overall dullness, festive season over-indulgence (Christmas treats, alcohol, late nights and a lax exercise regime) can take its toll on your skin. Fortunately, the effects of over-indulgence can be easily remedied. Our Melita Skin Specialists share their secrets on how to get your glow back in the New Year.

Exfoliation and / or Deep Cleanse

One great way to start is with a simple exfoliation. Get rid of the effects of those late nights and heavy make-up by exfoliategiving your skin a good scrub. Wearing makeup for a prolonged period of time could clog pores. Unfortunately social environmental pollution (smoking, air-conditioning) can also contribute to this, causing collagen breakdown. This leads to accelerated aging in skin – which means more wrinkles and sagging. Even if you cleanse regularly, a gentle exfoliator not only removes dull, dead surface skin, but also stimulates rejuvenation. Make sure that you use one suited to your skin type. The beginning of the year is an excellent time to experiment with new skincare products, but to ensure they are not going to irritate your skin check with a skin care specialist.

Eye Careeyes

For replenishing the skin around the delicate eye area, an eye mask is effective. Late nights and / or over-indulgence can wreak havoc on your eyes, especially the delicate skin in the eye area, leaving the skin dry and flaky, often wrinkly. Hydrate these areas with an eye mask or eye cream. Like all skin products, application is paramount and be sure to apply to the eye contour only.

Think of your lips as a sponge. When exposed to moisture, they absorb water and plump up, when dehydrated, they dry out and shrink. Because they’re always exposed, lips are prone to dehydration, particularly during our cold, windy winter months. The skin on the lips is also unlike skin anywhere else on the body, it’s thinner, has no oil glands, making them more prone to dehydration. Long lasting lipsticks can be extremely drying, adding to this problem. Lip creams and treatments can help combat this, leaving lips hydrated and naturally plumped.

Hydration Maskshydration

Our cold, harsh winter weather, with or without the dehydrating effects of alcohol, seriously dry and dehydrate skin. The result, tired flaky skin. To directly combat dehydration, use an intensive, hydrating face mask or treatment to revive your tired complexion, followed by a good quality moisturiser to lock it in.

Replenishing Oils, Boosters & Barriers

Protective barriers, these are the new go-to in today’s skin care routines, protecting the skolis-and-boosterin by locking in the natural moisturisers. Like all specialised treatments, a good skin care therapist, with face mapping, will be able to provide you with expertise feedback on your requirements and recommend a suitable product.

Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise

You wouldn’t go a day without drinking water, right? Well, you shouldn’t go a day without hydrating your skin.  In the short term, proper hydration makes skin look healthy. Using moisturizer has proven benefits for the skin over long term. Hydration is what allows skin to function at peak performance. moisturiseHydrated skin cells can rapidly repair themselves and turnover fresh cells, which means huge anti-aging benefits. And don’t forget a night cream.  Both day and night creams are important and have different functions. During the day we need to protect our skin from the environment. However night creams are just as important. As we lose a lot of moisture while we sleep, a richer texture night cream prevents this.

Re-energize your skin with a Facial

Facials are so much more than an hour or so of indulgent pampering, they have enormous benefits to the health and wellness of your skin. Think of facials as specialised treatment, whereby a skin care therapist assesses logothe needs of your skin and with product knowledge, selects only appropriate products choices, but also appropriate treatment option.
